Pertamina develops waste management ecosystem in Guwosari, Bantul
PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is building a sustainable waste management ecosystem in Guwosari, Pajangan, Bantul, DI Yogyakarta, which creates green jobs, increases economic value, and strengthens environmental education for the community.
“In Guwosari, we see how waste, which was previously considered a problem, can be managed into an opportunity, opening business opportunities while building community awareness regarding environmental care,” said the President Director of Pertamina Patra Niaga, Mars Ega Legowo Putra, in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday.
According to him, waste does not always have to end as a problem. In Guwosari, waste management is actually developing and providing benefits to the community through the Go Sari Programme, nurtured by Pertamina Patra Niaga via the Rewulu Fuel Terminal since 2023.
Through the development of the Guwosari Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (TPS3R) Waste Processing Site, the community is not only encouraged to reduce waste at its source but is also directly involved in the management process to create economic value.
Currently, the Guwosari TPS3R is capable of managing approximately 4.5 tonnes of waste every day and has created green jobs for 27 workers, all of whom have received social security benefits.
He stated that the Go Sari Programme is an example of how sustainability can be built from things close to people’s daily lives. “For us, sustainability is not just about protecting the environment, but about how these efforts can provide real benefits to the community,” he added.
According to Mars Ega, through the Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) Programme, this demonstrates that Pertamina Patra Niaga’s role is not only to maintain energy security but also to ensure the company provides economic and social value to the communities around its operational areas.
At the same opportunity, the VP of Community Involvement & Development at Pertamina Patra Niaga, Dian Hapsary Firasati, said that the development of Go Sari is designed to build an ecosystem that provides sustainable benefits across environmental, social, and economic aspects.
“We want CSR programmes to not stop at providing facilities or aid, but to evolve into an ecosystem that can operate alongside the community,” said Dian.
According to Dian, Go Sari serves as an example of how environmental management can create green jobs, increase community capacity, and serve as a learning centre for more people.
Beyond waste management, the Guwosari TPS3R has also evolved into an environmental management education centre. A total of 21 agencies and universities have utilised the Guwosari TPS3R as a learning location for waste management practices.
The social impact of this programme has also been expanded through collaboration with the Bantul Class IIB Detention Centre. A total of 30 inmates are involved in activities as eco-furniture artisans, utilising recyclable materials.
“The collaboration with the Bantul Detention Centre is an important part because we want to ensure the programme’s benefits reach more groups of people,” she said. She emphasised that through the skill of making eco-furniture, inmates gain space to learn, create, and produce products with economic value.
Local Hero of TPS3R Guwosari, Hendry, expressed appreciation for the support from Pertamina Patra Niaga, which has accompanied the development of the Guwosari TPS3R into a widely recognised waste management and environmental education centre.
According to Hendry, through the support and commitment of Pertamina Patra Niaga, TPS3R Guwosari continues to grow and provide greater benefits to the community.
“Now, TPS3R Guwosari has also become a waste management learning site known by various groups and agencies, both in Yogyakarta and from various regions in Indonesia,” said Hendry.
The Go Sari programme is expected to support Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) No. 13: Climate Action and No. 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
