Pertamina Completes 3D Seismic Survey in Makassar Strait

PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), the upstream subholding of Pertamina, has completed the Kandawulo Offshore 3D Seismic Survey in the Makassar Strait in July 2026. The survey forms part of the firm work commitment for PHE Jambi Merang in an open area. The activity was executed through PHE’s subsidiary, PT Elnusa Tbk, in collaboration with China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL). VP Exploration Technical Excellence & Coordination at PHE, who also serves as the head of the Kandawulo 3D Seismic Survey project, Ahmad Najihal Amal, explained that the project was completed successfully with zero accidents and was on time, on budget, and on schedule. The 2,500 square kilometre 3D survey was completed in 43 days, significantly faster than the targeted 85 days, thanks to cooperation and collaboration across all involved functions. The project’s success was supported by thorough operational preparation and effective coordination with stakeholders, including the West Sulawesi Provincial Government, Mamuju Regency Government, Mamuju Regency Marine and Fisheries Office, and security forces from Kodaeral VI Makassar and Lanal Mamuju. The survey utilised a seismic vessel owned by COSL, employing a 3D Marine Streamer Broadband acquisition method. This technology allows for more accurate subsurface imaging, particularly for exploration targets at greater depths. The method is considered highly suitable for the Makassar Strait region, which holds significant oil and gas potential and requires further exploration to optimise national energy resource development. The successful completion of the survey underscores PHE’s commitment to promoting sustainable exploration, prioritising occupational safety, and strengthening efforts to discover new oil and gas resources to support Indonesia’s energy security.
