The enhancement of women’s roles in the maritime sector is not just about equality, but also part of efforts to build superior, adaptable, and globally competitive talent.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Pertamina Patra Niaga has expressed its commitment to increasing the female workforce in the maritime sector to strengthen inclusive human resources (HR).

“We see that enhancing women’s roles in the maritime sector is not only about equality, but also part of efforts to build superior talent that is adaptable and globally competitive,” said Corporate Secretary of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Roberth M.V. Dumatubun, in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.

Roberth conveyed that strengthening inclusive maritime HR is part of the company’s commitment to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the social aspect.

He added that the company continues to open opportunities for competency development for all ship crew members regardless of gender, so that every individual has equal opportunities to grow and contribute.

“Diversity actually becomes a strength in building a solid team and more effective and sustainable operations,” he said.

Currently, there are 41 female female officers and 56 female cadets serving on 78 ships, or about 2 percent of the total crew pool. This figure reflects significant potential to expand women’s participation in the shipping sector, which has long been dominated by men.

Working at sea is not just about technical skills, he said, but also mental resilience, high discipline, and the ability to adapt in a dynamic environment.

The presence of female officers on ships proves that professionalism in the maritime world is built on the basis of competence and integrity, without being limited by gender.

Going forward, Pertamina Patra Niaga will continue to promote maritime talent development through policies that support equality, competency enhancement, and the creation of an inclusive work environment.

Pertamina views this as an important part of strengthening inclusive and sustainable maritime HR.
