Pertamina Chief Says Indonesia to Increase LPG Imports from US to 70 Per Cent

JAKARTA — PT Pertamina (Persero) plans to increase the proportion of LPG imports from the United States to approximately 70 per cent as part of implementing the energy trade agreement between Indonesia and the US.

Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri stated that the share of LPG imports from the US, currently at around 57 per cent, would be raised to 70 per cent. The move follows the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) signed by President Prabowo Subianto and US President Donald Trump on 19 February 2026.

Under the agreement, the Indonesian government has committed to importing oil and gas products worth up to US$15 billion (approximately Rp253.47 trillion) per year from the United States to strengthen domestic energy security.

Beyond LPG, Pertamina said it would also push for increased crude oil imports from the US, whilst exploring procurement of refined petroleum products with American partners.

Simon emphasised that the entire import process would continue to follow open tender and bidding mechanisms rather than direct appointment, ensuring transparency and competitive pricing. He stressed that the increased share of imports from the US would adhere to economic principles and good governance standards.

The policy does not increase Indonesia's total national import volume. Instead, the government is redirecting a portion of purchases previously sourced from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa towards the United States, in order to maintain a balanced trade relationship between the two countries.

Following the signing of the agreement, technical finalisation is targeted for completion within 90 days, supported by government policy coordination and licensing arrangements.
