Pertamina and Pupuk Indonesia Collaborate for Energy and Food Security
PT Pertamina (Persero) and PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) have established a partnership to explore various opportunities in strengthening national energy security while supporting the sustainability of raw material supplies for the fertiliser industry to ensure national food security. This cooperation was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 1 July 2026.
The President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Simon Aloysius Mantiri, stated that this synergy is an embodiment of the President of the Republic of Indonesia’s ‘Asta Cita’ programme, specifically regarding building national independence through energy and food self-sufficiency.
“No nation is truly sovereign without energy. And no nation is truly strong without food. Therefore, the synergy between Pertamina and Pupuk Indonesia represents the two main foundations of Indonesian sovereignty: energy and food,” explained Simon, as quoted on Wednesday (1/7/2026).
Simon continued, noting that collaboration has become a strategic necessity. Pertamina is continuously undergoing transformation through its Dual Growth Strategy, strengthening its core business to maintain national energy security while developing low-carbon businesses through various innovations towards Net Zero Emissions.
Alongside this, Pupuk Indonesia holds a strategic role in maintaining national agricultural productivity and strengthening Indonesia’s petrochemical industry.
“When these two forces are combined, I believe we are not only creating efficiency, but building a strategic ecosystem that strengthens the industrial and economic foundations of the Indonesian nation,” explained Simon.
On the same occasion, the President Director of PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persio), Rahmad Pribadi, stated that Indonesia requires a strong energy sector to drive industry, support food security, and encourage economic growth.
“Pertamina and Pupuk Indonesia carry complementary mandates. When these two mandates are combined, what we are building is not merely a relationship between companies, but a partnership that strengthens the national industrial ecosystem, increases industrial competitiveness, and drives national economic growth,” explained Rahmad.
Rahmad added that by combining Pertamina’s competence in the energy sector with Pupuk Indonesia’s experience in the fertiliser and petrochemical sectors, a synergy will be created that generates added value for both companies and provides benefits for Indonesia.
“Therefore, the synergy between Pertamina and Pupuk Indonesia is an important step in integrating the strengths of both companies to address challenges and capture future growth opportunities,” added Rahmad.
This Memorandum of Understanding serves as a foundation for Pertamina and Pupuk Indonesia to explore various cooperation opportunities that provide added value through the utilisation of the respective competencies, strategic assets, and capabilities of each company. This collaboration is also expected to strengthen the national industrial ecosystem, encourage downstreaming, increase the added value of Indonesia’s natural resources, and enhance the competitiveness of the domestic industry.
