Pertamina and LanzaTech Sign MoU to Develop Clean Energy Solutions Based on Technology
Pertamina and LanzaTech signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop low-carbon energy solutions based on technology during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, Texas, United States. The signing was conducted by Pertamina’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Oki Muraza and LanzaTech’s Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Holmgren. LanzaTech is a global US-based technology company that converts carbon-rich waste gases into fuels and chemicals through microbial fermentation. With a circular economy approach, the technology helps industries reduce emissions while creating economic value and supporting energy resilience. This initiative is expected to address waste management challenges while opening new opportunities in the alternative energy sector and recycled carbon-based chemical industries. Pertamina’s Deputy CEO Oki Muraza stated that Indonesia faces two main challenges: increasing urban waste volumes and growing demand for clean energy. Currently, the national waste volume reaches around 56,600 tonnes per day, while ethanol needs are projected to increase to about 2.4 million kilolitres by 2030. From a business perspective, this collaboration opens potential for developing a circular economy-based value chain, from waste processing and ethanol production to utilisation of derivative products such as blended fuels and chemical industry raw materials. This business model has the potential to create new revenue sources while improving waste and energy management efficiency. LanzaTech CEO Jennifer Holmgren added that her company possesses microbial-based fermentation technology capable of converting various carbon sources into high-value products, including ethanol. This partnership is expected to drive the development of an integrated circular economy model, increase domestic energy supply, and open investment opportunities in technology-based clean energy sectors. Pertamina’s initiative in partnering with LanzaTech also strengthens Indonesia’s position as an energy investment destination that relies not only on resources but also on innovation and technology, with development potential in various major cities in Indonesia. As a leading company in the energy transition sector, Pertamina is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target of 2060 and continues to promote programmes that directly impact the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All these efforts align with Pertamina’s transformation oriented towards governance, public service, business sustainability, and the environment, by applying environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles across all business lines and operations.
