PT Pertamina (Persero) and INPEX Corporation (INPEX) are strengthening their strategic partnership for the development of the Abadi LNG Project in the Masela Block, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The Abadi LNG Project in the Arafura Sea, Indonesia, is one of Indonesia’s largest gas projects, expected to serve as a long-term energy supply source for the Asian region. This strategic collaboration in developing the Abadi LNG project value chain in the Arafura Sea is a continuation of the previous MoU signed by both companies in July 2023. Pertamina’s President Director, Simon Aloysius Mantiri, stated that through this cooperation, Pertamina and INPEX are exploring various synergy opportunities in project development, from upstream aspects to potential utilisation of gas and LNG in various energy sectors. “Through this MoU extension, Pertamina hopes this LNG project can be realised and make a real contribution to the nation,” he explained in a statement on Tuesday (31/3/2026). The signing was conducted by PT Pertamina (Persero)’s President Director, Simon Aloysius Mantiri, and Takayuki Ueda, President & CEO of INPEX Corporation, in Tokyo on Monday, 30 March 2026. At the same time, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding, also signed an MoU with INPEX for potential upstream oil and gas business development in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. “Pertamina continues to seek energy supply sources to meet the country’s energy needs. Through the integrated upstream-to-downstream business of the Pertamina Group, strategic partnerships with various parties will strengthen Pertamina’s steps in achieving energy resilience targets,” Simon explained. The Abadi LNG Project is currently operated by INPEX through its subsidiary, INPEX Masela Ltd., with a planned production capacity of 9.5 million tonnes of LNG per year. The project will also integrate carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to support lower-emission energy development. INPEX has participated in upstream oil and gas activities in Indonesia since the 1960s and currently acts as the operator of the Abadi LNG Project in the Masela Block. Through this strategic collaboration, Pertamina and INPEX will explore cooperation in various upstream and downstream aspects of the Abadi LNG project, including potential collaboration in offtake and transportation of products, marine transportation activities, and cooperation in carbon credit trading and carbon offset. As a leading company in the energy transition sector, Pertamina is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission target by 2060 and continues to promote programmes that directly impact the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All these efforts align with Pertamina’s transformation oriented towards governance, public service, business and environmental sustainability, by applying Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles across all business lines and operations.
