Jakarta — Pertamina and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) have officially entered into a strategic collaboration. The collaboration is set out in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Research Collaboration and Joint Study on the Development of Sustainable Energy Transition Pathways. Signing of the MoU took place as part of the Indonesia Petroleum Association (IPA) Convex 2026 event. The signing was carried out by Pertamina’s Director of Strategy, Portfolio and Business Development (SPPU) Emma Sri Martini and ERIA Chief Operating Officer Takayuki Yamanaka. ERIA is an international think tank focusing on economic and policy dimensions in the ASEAN and East Asia region. The institute is fully supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and is widely recognised for its excellence in regional energy policy analysis. Emma said Pertamina remains committed to supporting government programmes in achieving national energy independence and also supporting the energy transition. To that end, Pertamina continues to develop its capabilities by collaborating with various stakeholders, including think tanks. “Energy independence and the energy transition are two strategies that Pertamina pursues in parallel. The two reinforce each other. This also represents the implementation of Pertamina’s Dual Growth Strategy,” Emma said. Emma explained that Pertamina currently pursues two main pillars of its business strategy: optimising its existing fossil-based energy business and accelerating the development of low-carbon businesses. The MoU covers two main pillars of cooperation: policy and economic analysis in the energy sector, as well as capacity building and knowledge exchange. Implementation of the MoU will be carried out by Pertamina Energy Institute (PEI) as Pertamina’s strategic think tank. “Through a partnership with ERIA, Pertamina will receive support in the form of policy studies based on research, comprehensive energy economics analysis, and strengthening institutional capacity aligned with the company’s business portfolio development and long-term strategy,” Emma said. Emma said the collaboration is expected to strengthen Pertamina’s strategic position in the regional area amid the ongoing dynamics of the global energy transition. “By collaborating with a range of stakeholders, including international think tanks, the capacity of the parties will be enhanced,” she said. In the same session, Pertamina Group also signed several collaborations, including JSA CCS Ammonia between PT Pertamina (Persero), PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), PGN and PT Pupuk Indonesia; Heads of Agreement on CCS in the Asri Basin between PHE and Exxon; and MOU on CCS in Pertamina’s Working Area between PT Pertamina (Persero), PHE and ERIA.
