Pertamina and Boeing Sign Key MoU on Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Pertamina has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with US aircraft manufacturer Boeing to explore opportunities in developing the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry in Indonesia. The agreement aims to support Indonesia’s efforts to decarbonise the aviation sector and move towards net-zero emissions. Both companies will focus on identifying feedstock sources, developing SAF technologies, and supporting related policy development. “We believe this collaboration will accelerate the development of a competitive SAF industry and create greater value for the Indonesian economy,” said Pertamina CEO Simon Aloysius Mantiri, as quoted by Reuters on Sunday. Boeing Indonesia Managing Director Indra Duivenvoorde said Indonesia has significant potential to become a regional leader in the sustainable aviation sector. Boeing projects that passenger traffic in Southeast Asia will grow by approximately 7% annually until 2044, driving demand for nearly 4,900 new aircraft. He expressed hope that SAF adoption would help reduce aviation emissions. Pertamina previously launched several SAF initiatives, including production and certification, use of SAF by its subsidiary Pelita Air, and the Cilacap Biorefinery project to produce SAF using used cooking oil and other sustainable waste feedstocks.
