Pertamina and Boeing Forge Synergy to Develop Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Indonesia
PT Pertamina (Persero) and Boeing Indonesia have established a synergy to develop Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to strengthen national energy security whilst supporting the decarbonisation of the aviation sector.
Pertamina’s President Director, Simon Aloysius Mantiri, affirmed that the strategic partnership with Boeing is a crucial step in accelerating SAF development as a foundation for transforming the aviation industry and national energy resilience.
“This partnership is about advancing the circular economy, strengthening national energy security, and supporting global aviation decarbonisation,” Simon said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The statement was made by Simon ahead of the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Pertamina and Boeing at the Indonesia Aero Summit 2026 in Jakarta, reinforcing collaboration on national SAF development.
He stated that SAF is now evolving not only as a solution for reducing emissions but also as an important instrument for strengthening national energy security through the diversification of aviation fuel supplies. According to him, global geopolitical changes and energy supply chain disruptions demonstrate the importance of building alternative fuel sources so that the aviation industry can withstand various international challenges.
Boeing is considered to have extensive experience as a pioneer in SAF development, having conducted the first commercial demonstration flight using a biofuel blend in 2008 with Virgin Atlantic and GE Aviation. The success of that demonstration, he said, became an important milestone that spurred innovation, investment, and the development of the global SAF industry, thereby accelerating the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel in various countries.
Pertamina believes that collaboration with Boeing will accelerate the development of technology, certification, and SAF supply chain integration needed to strengthen the national aviation industry in a sustainable and competitive manner. The company is optimistic that the collaboration will open opportunities to build a regional SAF network in Asia by optimally leveraging Boeing’s technological advantages and Pertamina’s strategic energy infrastructure.
Pertamina hopes this long-term partnership can create added value for the industry, strengthen national energy security, and simultaneously support global aviation decarbonisation targets together with all stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Boeing Indonesia Managing Director Indra Duivenvoorde said his company has partnered with Indonesia for 77 years through strengthening aviation, defence, sustainability, safety, supply chains, and aviation talent development. “This partnership with Pertamina is an extension of our commitment. We are working to advance Indonesia’s sustainable aviation future and strengthen the SAF ecosystem in this country,” Indra said.
He stated that the collaboration between Pertamina and Boeing aims to identify SAF feedstocks, support policy development, and explore market opportunities that can help build a stronger and more resilient aviation value chain. “We look forward to continuing this partnership with Pertamina and the entire ecosystem, and to supporting Indonesia’s SAF ecosystem in becoming a reality,” he said. “At Boeing, we remain committed to Indonesia, not just as a market but as a partner. A partner in building capabilities, strengthening ecosystems, and investing in human capital.”
