Pertalite Price Listed as Rp18,040 per Litre Sparks Outcry, Pertamina Issues Official Clarification

Information regarding the price of Pertalite, reportedly reaching Rp18,040 per litre, suddenly drew public attention after appearing on fuel purchase receipts at several Pertamina filling stations. The figure was widely discussed because it was referred to as the normal or true economic price of Pertalite. In response, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga finally issued an official explanation. The company emphasised that the Rp18,040 per litre figure shown on the receipt is not the price the public must pay, but rather the economic price calculated based on various components of energy supply costs. Corporate Secretary of Pertamina Patra Niaga, Roberth MV Dumatubun, explained that the pricing policy for subsidised fuel is entirely the authority of the government. In this case, Pertalite falls under the category of Special Assignment Fuel Type (JBKP) which receives state subsidies. Therefore, the price paid by the public when purchasing Pertalite still refers to the provisions set by the government, not based on the economic value appearing on the purchase receipt. “Pertamina Patra Niaga acts as the operator that implements and complies with Government policy regarding the distribution of subsidised fuel. The current retail price of Pertalite paid by the public is the price set by the government, taking into account various social and economic aspects,” said Roberth in a written statement on Tuesday, 16 June 2026. Roberth explained that the Rp18,040 per litre figure appearing on filling station receipts is the economic price of the fuel. This value is calculated based on energy market prices and the costs required to deliver the fuel until it can be used by the public. However, the existence of subsidies means the public does not need to pay for Pertalite at that economic price. The government bears a portion of the cost through the energy subsidy mechanism so that the retail price received by consumers remains lower. According to Pertamina, the information regarding the economic price does not change the current applicable retail price provisions for Pertalite. The public continues to purchase subsidised fuel at the price already set by the government. Pertamina stressed that fuel subsidies serve a strategic purpose in maintaining national economic stability. The policy is designed to assist the public, particularly lower-middle income groups, in meeting their transportation and daily activity needs.
