Personal Data Security a Growing Challenge in the Cloud Computing Era
The development of cloud computing technology has brought major changes to how individuals and organisations store and manage data. Behind the ease of access, flexibility, and efficiency offered, personal data security has become an increasingly important challenge in the current digital era. The use of cloud-based services continues to rise along with the growth of digital activities, ranging from online transactions and social media to various application services. This condition makes personal data an asset that must be protected from various threats, such as data leaks, unauthorised access, and cyberattacks.
Dicky Haryanto, Head of the Information Technology Study Programme at Cyber University, stated that data security is not solely the responsibility of technology service providers. “Many people still assume that data security is entirely the responsibility of the cloud service provider. In fact, users also have an important role through safe digital habits, such as using strong passwords and enabling two-factor authentication,” he said. He added that cloud service providers generally have implemented various protection systems, such as data encryption, multi-layered authentication, and threat detection technology. However, these measures need to be supported by user awareness in safeguarding their own personal information.
Beyond the technical aspects, regulation is also a crucial part of personal data protection. Governments in various countries, including Indonesia, have developed various policies and rules to ensure data management is carried out responsibly. Dicky assessed that strong regulations can provide legal protection for the public while encouraging service providers to implement better security standards. “Data security is not just a technological issue, but also concerns governance, regulation, and user awareness. These three aspects must work together so that the digital ecosystem can develop safely and sustainably,” he said.
Organisations also need to implement comprehensive security strategies. This can be done through the application of information security frameworks, regular system audits, and security awareness training for employees. He explained that this approach is important to minimise risk while increasing public trust in the digital services used daily. In line with the development of cloud technology and the need for digital security, Cyber University is developing student competencies through its Information Technology Study Programme. Students are equipped with skills in information systems, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and digital technology management. Through a project-based curriculum and a practical approach integrated with industry needs, students are encouraged to understand how to design, manage, and secure data-based systems professionally. “The need for digital talent who understand cybersecurity and data management will continue to increase. Therefore, students must be equipped with relevant competencies to face the challenges of digital transformation in the future,” said Dicky.
