Persipura beats Pusam 2-0

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya (JP): Local favorites Persipura Jayapura took revenge on Wednesday over Pusam Samarinda of East Kalimantan 2-0 in the second round of the Bank Mandiri national soccer league at the Mandala stadium here.

Albert Yom of Persipura created the first goal in the 17th minute, while Adrianus Kuwaub sealed his team's victory in the second half.

Persipura assistant coach Ino Ivakdalam told The Jakarta Post after the match he was satisfied with his players' performance. In the league's first round, Persipura lost to Pusam 5-1.

"Well before the game, we had decided to earn full points. We wanted to retaliate for our loss in Samarinda," he said. "By conquering Pusam, we have begun the second round of the league successfully," he added.

In the first round, Persipura ranked fifth after Persebaya. "For the time being, we are able to climb to fourth position with this victory," he said.

He said it was Persipura's first performance without coach Rudy Keltjes, who has been appointed as coach to the under-19 national team.

"As assistant coach, I always consult Bung Rudy by phone because he is still our head coach," said Ino, a former Persipura player. (eba)
