Persija wins Brunei league

JAKARTA (JP): A sudden-death goal from Gendut Doni gave Indonesian league runner-up Persija of Jakarta the championship trophy at the Brunei League Invitational in Bandar Seri Begawan at the expense of Bec-Tero Sasana of Thailand on Monday.

Trailing until 70 minutes into the game after a first-half goal from Sathanu Uthaisri, Bako Sadissou brought the game to life with an equalizer.

Gendut slammed the winner in the 108th minute, to the cheers of Indonesian supporters who packed the 65,000-seated Negara Stadium. The victory earned Persija the winner's B$30,000 (US$15,000) purse.

Persija coach Sofyan Hadi said there were some lapses in his squad's defense in the first half, much was blamed on defender and captain Nuralim. The coach then replaced Nuralim with Joko Kuspito in the 63rd minute. (amd)
