Persib Championship Celebration Claims Two Lives and Damages Dozens of Parks
Uncontrolled celebrations following Persib Bandung’s championship victory in Bandung resulted in two deaths and widespread damage to public facilities. Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan expressed deep concern over the fatalities. Recent data shows the death toll from alcohol-related traffic accidents has risen to two. ‘Another fatality was discovered last night due to an alcohol-related traffic accident. Field reports indicate high alcohol consumption during the celebrations, with officers finding enough empty liquor bottles to fill a pickup truck,’ Farhan said in Bandung on Sunday (25 May). In response, Bandung City Administration will coordinate with police to conduct large-scale raids on illegal alcohol distribution. The focus will be on unauthorised sales and distribution channels, which were identified as causing public disorder during the championship festivities. Beyond alcohol issues, cleanliness presents a major challenge. The city administration recorded a 10% increase in waste volume—approximately 50 tonnes—over the past two days, with the highest accumulations in crowded areas and convoy routes. Farhan instructed all civil servants and regional agencies to complete city cleanup within 24 hours. Since Friday night until Sunday early morning, joint task forces have worked overtime to restore the city’s aesthetic appeal. ‘I monitored the city conditions from 2am to 6am. It’s not yet fully normal, but this fuels our drive to expedite work. The euphoria is temporary; now it’s time to resume serving the public,’ he stated. Regarding damage to 35 park sites, the city administration confirmed ongoing phased repairs. Farhan stressed that while Persib’s victory is a great joy, public order and safety must remain the top priority moving forward.
