Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Library (Perpusnas) is committed to continuously improving services to the public regarding literacy amid the efficiency policy that has officially become a national policy to address global conflicts.

“In the midst of national policy dynamics, Perpusnas remains present adaptively to maintain service quality and expand the impact of literacy to reach all levels of society. The efficiency carried out by the government is seen not as a reduction in services, but as a sharpening of priorities based on impact,” said the Main Secretary of Perpusnas, Joko Santoso, at a press conference launching the logo for the 46th Anniversary (HUT) of Perpusnas in Jakarta on Monday.

He emphasised that services to the public continue to run optimally, both physical and digital services that are continuously strengthened. In addition, strengthening services is also carried out in terms of quality, system security, and the development of a community literacy ecosystem.

“Digital services such as e-resources are also strengthened to ensure security, stability, and protection of digital collections as national knowledge assets. In addition, governance transformation through the integration of information systems continues to be promoted so that decision-making is faster and data-based,” he said.

Moreover, Perpusnas continues to strengthen the function of collection management and ISBN, ISSN, and ISMN services as an important part of the national publishing ecosystem.

“The digitisation of ancient manuscripts is also being accelerated as an effort to preserve the nation’s collective memory. In terms of resources, the capacity of librarians is strengthened, while encouraging libraries as centres of community learning based on social inclusion,” said Joko.

“Starting in 2026, membership cards will also use a digital format. On average, ISBN services reach 10,000 titles per month or around 406 titles per day,” he said.

Suharyanto also explained that the series of events for the 46th HUT includes exhibitions at three locations, namely in the cultural heritage building area, the 9th floor related to Nusantara manuscript services, and the 16th floor for photos and paintings. The exhibition runs from 4 to 29 May 2026. In addition, Perpusnas has produced around 910 derivative books and 125 children’s readings based on ancient Nusantara manuscripts that can be accessed for free.

The Deputy for Library Resource Development, Adin Bondar, added that literacy strengthening continues to be carried out through cross-sector collaborations. The people’s school library development programme has built 224 libraries with 291,000 books, 448 bookshelves, and 142 digital kiosks.

“In addition, around 20,000 village libraries have been built and 10,000 students involved in the community literacy strengthening programme. The literacy movement also involves literacy volunteers, cooperation with ministries and local governments, as well as the distribution of around 20 million reading books to the public,” said Adin.
