Perplexity Releases AI "Worker" on Mac, Capable of Managing Files and Running Applications

The development of AI agents is increasingly heading towards more practical and sophisticated uses. The latest from Perplexity, an AI-based search engine company, is the introduction of a feature called “Personal Computer” for Mac devices. This feature was first introduced in March and was initially available through a waitlist system. It is now officially launched for Perplexity Max subscribers. Personal Computer is an advancement from the previously introduced Perplexity Computer, positioned as an all-in-one “digital worker”. In this latest version, its capabilities have been enhanced through direct integration with local files and applications on the user’s Mac device. One of the key advantages offered by the Personal Computer feature is that the AI system not only provides answers but can also execute various tasks directly on the Mac. Users can activate this feature by pressing the two Command keys on the keyboard. Once active, the AI can receive instructions directly via text or voice. Another interesting aspect is that this AI can work across applications on the Mac device. The system can even monitor active applications and automatically display relevant quick actions based on the user’s context. Perplexity explains that this feature can be used on Mac devices running macOS 14 Sonoma or later versions. However, for a more optimal experience, the company also recommends using a Mac mini device. This device is considered ideal because it can operate continuously (24/7), allowing the AI to work in the background without interruption. This is important, especially for handling tasks that require the machine to always be on or secure access to local files and native applications. Users can also start and manage tasks remotely via other devices such as iPhones, so they do not always need to be in front of the computer.
