Perindo Optimistic that the Parliamentary Threshold Will Fall From 4 Percent in the 2029 Elections
JAKARTA — Secretary General of Perindo, Ferry Rizky, says the party is confident that the parliamentary threshold (PT) will be lowered from 4 percent ahead of the 2029 elections. He made the remarks in response to former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, who said the parliamentary threshold would be difficult to reduce. ‘Perindo is confident that the PT will change and fall,’ Ferry told Kompas.com on Thursday (5 March 2026). Ferry explained that Perindo believes the DPR and the government will implement the Constitutional Court decision No. 116/PUU-XXIII/2025, in which the 4 percent PT must be altered for the next election. He stated that lowering the parliamentary threshold is necessary to prevent disproportionality, namely votes wasted. The idea of changing the parliamentary threshold has resurfaced as the DPR plans to revise the Election Law. However, the drive to lower the figure is not easy because it involves the interests of the big parties in parliament. Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, believes the DPR will struggle to reduce the parliamentary threshold because the seats held by larger parties benefit from votes wasted by smaller parties. According to Mahfud, the seats that could have been spread to smaller parties end up distributed to parties that pass the threshold. This condition means big parties have an interest in maintaining a high threshold.
