Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association (Periklindo) assesses that Indonesia holds a strategic position to become a hub for electric vehicles (EVs) in markets with right-hand drive systems.

Periklindo General Chairman, retired General TNI Moeldoko, stated that this opportunity arises amid global geopolitical dynamics and the automotive industry’s shift towards electric vehicles.

“Indonesia must position itself as a hub, particularly for right-hand drive EVs,” Moeldoko said during an economic dialogue in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He explained that several countries using right-hand drive systems, such as the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and India, could serve as potential markets for the development of the national electric vehicle industry.

Moeldoko assessed that developing the electric vehicle industry cannot rely solely on the availability of mineral resources but must be supported by strengthened research and technology.

“We must move towards focused research on batteries and other new technologies,” he said.

He added that battery technology is a key factor in electric vehicle development, particularly to improve charging efficiency and usage endurance.

“We can collaborate while undertaking technological transformation,” he stated.

Moeldoko also reminded that Indonesia should not only become a market but must be capable of producing electric vehicle products with higher added value.

He further noted that electric vehicle development is linked to economic growth, including through increased consumption and investment.

Furthermore, Moeldoko assessed that developing the electric vehicle ecosystem must be carried out comprehensively, from upstream to downstream industries, including infrastructure readiness and user education.
