Makassar - The Indonesian Neurological Association (Perdosni) 2026 has stated its readiness to fill the need for neurologists in regional hospitals to strengthen brain health services for the Indonesian people and support the realisation of the Golden Generation 2045.

“So if you want recommendations from us for hospitals that do not yet have neurology, the opportunity is greater, provided that the regent prepares minimal facilities and infrastructure such as a CT scan,” said the Chairman of the Central Perdosni Neurology Education Council, Muhammad Akbar, in Makassar on Saturday.

This Professor from the Department of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine, Hasanuddin University, explained that for a neurologist to work in a hospital, there must at least be CT scan equipment to establish a diagnosis.

“Because if not, then when a doctor establishes a diagnosis based on history, for example, it cannot be imagined. So, local governments, if you have neurology, at least there should be a CT scan,” he said.

Based on the national medical and health workforce roadmap book related to needs projections through a regional approach, the need for neurologists is 2,987 people in 2026, while the existence of neurologists in Indonesia is around 2,800 people, although this year there will be 228 neurology graduates. It is also mentioned that there are currently 950 neurology candidates participating in 16 study programmes across Indonesia.

“We are trying to find out how many hospitals do not have neurologists. From Ministry of Health data, there are 102 hospitals without neurologists. 82 of them are regional hospitals. Thus, the need for neurology cannot be more than that,” he said.

Therefore, he said, education for the public is needed regarding the importance of neurologists, especially in cities that do not yet have neurologists.

Chairman of the Indonesian College of Neurology, Syahrul, mentioned that there are 20 centres for specialist neurology doctor education, one of which is at Hasanuddin University, which is responsible for national education, education standards, and competency standards, so that specialist neurology doctors have good quality.

“Including how the number of specialist doctors can be met, can help distribute specialist neurology doctors evenly throughout places and cities in Indonesia,” he said.

He stated that Perdosni is present to improve education standards, competency, and encourage doctors’ desire to pursue education in neurology, which is a need as well as the hope of the community.

“We also need adequate hospital facilities, competent personnel, the right system. So that’s it, we together develop synergies with various universities and the government,” he said.
