Perbasi suspends coach for 10 years over alleged violence in Central Java

The Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi), through its Legal, Ethics and Discipline Body, has imposed a 10-year suspension on a coach suspected of committing violence against players in Central Java.

The decision is set out in a DPP Perbasi decree dated 31 August 2026. The sanction, a ban on playing or participating in matches, applies for 10 years against the coach concerned.

“As chairman, I instruct all regional administrators across Indonesia to respond actively and thoroughly investigate any violence that may occur, and to continue coordinating with DPP Perbasi in every step taken,” said DPP Perbasi Chairman Budisatrio Djiwandono in Jakarta on Monday.

Budisatrio stressed that the punishment will be followed by revocation of the coach’s licence if the person concerned is proven guilty based on a court ruling that has permanent legal force.

In making the decision, he continued, DPP Perbasi is guided by Article 43 of the Perbasi Articles of Association, which grants authority to impose sanctions on sports actors or athletes who do not comply with the organisation’s rules and regulations.

He also reminded all coaches and stakeholders involved in basketball development in Indonesia not to use violent methods in athlete development.

Meanwhile, DPP Perbasi Secretary General Nirmala Dewi added that the sanction is part of the organisation’s commitment to maintaining integrity and discipline in basketball activities, as well as providing a deterrent effect so that similar cases do not recur.

The decision is also based on an investigation report from the Central Java Provincial Perbasi Regional Board, Number 232/PERBASI-JATENG/VIII/2026, dated 9 August 2026.

In the report, the coach is suspected of committing a number of ethical and disciplinary violations, including verbal violence in the form of insults and abuse towards several players, both directly and through online conversations.

In addition, there are allegations of abuse of power in the form of threats to revoke scholarships, imposition of punishments unrelated to the team’s interests, and actions touching on players’ personal lives.

The report also lists alleged beatings outside training hours, intimidation, searching of personal belongings without consent, and acts of hitting, kicking and spitting on players both during matches and during briefings for the men’s team.

Meanwhile, the coach concerned has also been reported to Semarang Metropolitan Police through police report Number LP/B/237/VII/2026/SPKT/POLRESTABES SEMARANG POLDA JAWA TENGAH.
