The Indonesian National Banking Association (Perbanas) is confident that the government and relevant authorities will appoint the best figure with high credibility and a strong commitment to national economic stability following the resignation of Perry Warjiyo as Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI). Perbanas fully entrusts the process of appointing a replacement to the constitutional mechanisms and prevailing laws and regulations.

“The national banking sector remains confident in the strength of the Bank Indonesia institution and its governance mechanisms,” said Perbanas Chairperson Hery Gunardi in an official statement in Jakarta on Monday. Hery added that Perbanas also believes coordination between authorities will continue to function well, ensuring that monetary stability, the payment system, and the national financial system remain secure.

In general, Perbanas respects the resignation of Perry Warjiyo from his position. The association believes that BI is an institution with a strong legal foundation, governance, and institutional mechanisms, so that all its duties and mandates will continue to be carried out effectively in accordance with the provisions of the law. The banking industry views policy continuity and financial system stability as the main foundations for maintaining public and business confidence.

Perbanas affirmed that the national banking industry is currently in a solid condition, supported by strong capital, adequate liquidity, and prudent risk management. Operational activities and services to the public are proceeding normally. Perbanas also called on all market participants and the public to prioritise information from official sources and avoid speculation that could affect perceptions of financial sector stability.

“Trust is the main asset of the financial system. Therefore, it is important for all stakeholders to allow the institutional process to proceed according to regulations, while continuing to maintain optimism about Indonesia’s strong economic fundamentals,” said Hery. Perbanas stated that going forward, it will continue to strengthen synergy with the government, BI, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), and all stakeholders to maintain financial system stability and support sustainable national economic growth.

On Monday morning, Bank Indonesia announced the voluntary resignation of Perry Warjiyo from his position as BI Governor for personal reasons. The resignation was tendered on Saturday (25/7). Following the resignation, BI’s Board of Governors’ Meeting on Sunday (26/7) appointed Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as Acting Governor of BI, in accordance with Article 50 paragraph (2) of the Bank Indonesia Law. At a press conference at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Monday evening, Destry confirmed that the government has not yet submitted a recommendation for a candidate to replace Perry Warjiyo. She explained that the mechanism for filling the position of BI Governor is regulated in the Bank Indonesia Law, and the process will begin with the nomination of candidates who meet the requirements, followed by selection and appointment by the President with the approval of the House of Representatives (DPR).
