The Ministry of Social Affairs has stated that the People’s School in Lamandau Regency, Central Kalimantan, will begin construction in October 2026, with 8.6 hectares of land already prepared for the permanent building.

Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, Deputy Minister of Social Affairs Agus Jabo Pri0f4no noted that this initiative is capable of instilling new hope for both students and their parents. He remarked that many children from impoverished families grow up in situations that impose significant limitations on them, and the state is intervening through the People’s School to provide new opportunities to achieve their dreams.

“Through social centres, the Ministry of Social Affairs is conducting mentoring, fulfilling basic needs, and providing appropriate services so that the conditions of these children undergo positive changes,” he said.

Consequently, he stated that the implementation of the People’s School requires governance, a curriculum, and human resources that understand the students’ backgrounds. Teachers and educational staff must recognise that pupils come from various family backgrounds facing economic and social challenges.

“This is what led me to think about how, because this is a rehabilitation process, these children can be treated well and undergo transformation,” he added.

The Deputy Minister explained that the primary goal of the People’s School is to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Therefore, the state must not stop at merely ensuring that children from poor families have access to their right to education; the government must also ensure their future sustainability after completing their studies.

“What happens after graduation? The Ministry of Social Affairs must ensure that those who wish to attend university are provided with placements, those who wish to work are provided with jobs, and those who wish to start a business are supported,” he concluded.
