People's appeal to DPR members
People's appeal to DPR members
From Republika
With reference to Republika of Oct. 15, I, who personally
would like to see a basic change in this nation's life, became
worried about the heavy load of the House of Representatives
(DPR) to analyze, in a very short period of time, the bills
submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of
Justice and the Indonesian Science Institute.
It is very improbable that the National Agenda will be carried
out perfectly if the political laws inherited from the New Order
continue to be used as the formal basis. As a member of the
community that strongly desires a rapid passing of the
transitional period (peacefully and constitutionally through the
general election), I think that the time allotted to analyze the
political bills is inconsiderate because the people demand that
DPR members work hard to finish their analysis of the bills in
time. Unless the DPR members do not feel themselves the people's
representatives but only an extension of the hand of the side
that wants to maintain the status quo.
The capabilities of DPR members to think far ahead -- be
critical and realistic -- in this situation of emergency are
strongly hoped for. It is, at the same time, to deny the opinion
that they sing in a "chorus" and do mere "rubber stamp" work. The
capabilities will eliminate the possibility of unfair and unjust
polls. The success or failure of the next general election that
is believed to be a milestone in Indonesia's history toward
democratic life based on the forces of law toward a bright future
is very dependent on the will of the people represented by DPR
members.
