Penyengat Island Polished into a Malay Cultural Tourism Destination
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) is carrying out area improvements on Penyengat Island in Tanjungpinang City, Riau Islands Province, to strengthen the island’s function as a Malay cultural tourism destination while enhancing environmental quality.
Penyengat Island is known as one of the centres of Malay history and culture, featuring various historical heritages such as the Sultan Riau Mosque, which serves as an icon of religious and cultural tourism in the region.
Entering the next phase in 2025, the improvements focus on strengthening the identity of Penyengat Island as a cultural tourism destination.
Interventions are carried out through the enhancement of the Plaza Penyambut Tamadun Melayu, the adat hall courtyard, landscape improvements in the area, the construction of storytelling spaces (storytelling and artwork), and the upgrading of environmental road quality.
The handling is done through an integrated approach, encompassing improvements to basic infrastructure such as environmental roads, drainage networks, and the provision of drinking water through the Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM).
In addition, a Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Waste Processing Facility (TPS3R) is being built, domestic wastewater management through communal septic tanks, and the provision of public open spaces.
The more organised area conditions also encourage the creation of a cleaner and more comfortable environment for coastal communities.
Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo stated that area infrastructure development not only aims to improve the physical condition of the region but also serves as a social and economic instrument to strengthen community resilience.
“Through area improvements, we ensure that basic services, such as drinking water, sanitation, and public spaces, are truly felt by the community,” said Dody, quoted on Monday (27/04/2026).
The programme aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita in promoting development from the village level and economic equity across various regions.
The Ministry of Public Works hopes that the Penyengat Island area improvements can continue sustainably, thereby not only enhancing environmental quality but also strengthening the area’s role as a centre for preserving Malay culture and a flagship tourism destination in the Riau Islands.
