Pentagon Requests Rp3.1 Quadrillion for Iran War, Trump Faces Major Challenges in Congress
The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) has reportedly requested White House approval to submit a supplemental budget to Congress to fund the war in Iran. According to a Washington Post report citing senior administration officials, the request amounts to more than US$200 billion (approximately Rp3.14 quadrillion).
This massive funding proposal is predicted to trigger a major political battle in Congress. Public support for the war effort remains low. Additionally, Democrats have issued sharp criticisms of the move.
On the other hand, although the Republican Party has signalled support for the additional funding request, they have yet to agree on a clear legislative strategy. They are still seeking a way to break the 60-vote threshold in the Senate to pass the budget.
This step is seen as contradictory to the political narrative built by President Donald Trump during his campaign. Previously, Trump promised to end US military involvement abroad. He also frequently criticised the Biden administration for the large funds poured into supporting Ukraine against the Russian invasion since 2022.
For comparison, as of last December, Congress had approved a total budget of around US$188 billion for the war in Ukraine. This figure is based on data from the US Special Inspector General for Operation Atlantic Resolve.
The Washington Post report also highlights how Trump has repeatedly criticised his predecessor for aiding Ukraine in defending its territory. However, Trump has often been accused of exaggerating or providing inaccurate information regarding total US spending on Ukraine.
Trump’s strategy of offering highly inflated cost estimates is suspected to aim at making the current cost of the war with Iran appear smaller or more efficient by comparison.
Now, public attention is focused on how the White House and Congress will balance military needs with mounting domestic political pressures arising from this war budget request.
