Pentagon Officials Continue to Resign, Latest Being Army Secretary Dan Driscoll

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned after serving for the past 18 months. Driscoll is the latest Pentagon official to step down under the leadership of President Donald Trump.

The White House has not explained the reasons for Driscoll’s resignation; however, several sources cited by Reuters on Tuesday (1/9/2026) revealed that the resignation follows tensions with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in recent months.

A US Army official told the Associated Press that Driscoll had discussed his resignation plans with Trump before submitting his official letter. In an official statement, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly praised Driscoll for his role in strengthening US Army readiness, assisting in Russia-Ukraine negotiations, and advancing the Trump agenda. Kelly did not mention the friction between Driscoll and Hegseth in her official statement.

Driscoll’s resignation comes several months after a massive reshuffle within the Army. In April, Hegseth abruptly removed senior official General Randy George, and subsequently, the commander for Europe and Africa, General Christopher Donahue, resigned in June.

General Christopher LaNeve, who was rapidly promoted during the current Hegseth era, is currently serving as the Acting Chief of Staff of the Army. Resignations have also occurred within the Navy; in April, the Pentagon announced the resignation of Navy Secretary John Phelan.
