Pentagon introduces ChatGPT and Grok specifically for defence requirements

The United States Department of Defense (DoD), or the Pentagon, is providing specialised versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok to 3 million civilian and military personnel.

According to a report from TechCrunch on Monday (31/8) local time, the two services, named ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, are bespoke AI services tailored to meet military and defence requirements. ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government are now available through GenAI.mil, a centralised AI portal launched by the Pentagon last year.

The portal is designed to provide US Department of Defense employees with access to various commercial AI models without the risk of transmitting sensitive government data. According to the US Department of Defense, GenAI.mil has already been utilised by more than 1.7 million unique users out of approximately 3 million personnel within the department’s environment.

ChatGPT Mil was developed through the OpenAI for Government programme and offers an experience similar to the public version of ChatGPT. The service provides several capabilities, including conversation, file management, projects, and specialised GPTs that can be customised to user needs. The Pentagon stated that ChatGPT Mil will focus on routine tasks involving heavy documentation that do not involve classified information. Its use covers administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy drafting, with additional features to be developed gradually.

Meanwhile, Grok for Government has a broader scope of use, including supporting military operational needs. Grok can also assist the military in performing various tasks with greater speed and precision. Its applications include market research analysis for procurement needs and supply chain management for logistics personnel.

Grok for Government is provided through SpaceX’s Starshield AI, which is a satellite network based on Starlink technology. The Pentagon’s move is part of the US government’s efforts to expand the use of AI to accelerate work and enhance defence capabilities, while maintaining strict data security. In addition to OpenAI and xAI, the Pentagon has also established partnerships with several other technology companies to enhance AI capabilities, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.
