The Penelokan Main Road in Kintamani Subdistrict, Bangli, Bali, is set to change its status to a tourism road. The road, originally a public facility, will henceforth be utilised as a tourism facility.

“We are currently consulting with the Bangli Public Works Department. The target is for the consultation results to be finalised by the end of this month and submitted to the Bali Provincial Government,” said the Head of the Bangli Tourism Department, I Wayan Dirga Yusa, to detikBali on Friday (10/4/2026).

Dirga Yusa stated that the tourism road status will be issued through a Bali Governor’s Regulation (Pergub). He emphasised that only the pedestrian areas of the road will be converted into tourism facilities.

“The pedestrian areas on Penelokan Main Road are what we intend to designate as tourism facilities. However, from the project perspective, it has already been determined,” said Dirga Yusa.

Dirga Yusa explained that the status change does not affect the entire length of Penelokan Main Road. According to him, the Kintamani tourism area begins from the gate near the Batur Geopark Museum up to the gate bordering Pura Ulun Danu Batur.

The section of the road to be granted tourism status is only 2.5 kilometres long. The remaining sections of Penelokan Main Road, Kintamani Main Road, and Gunung Batur Road in Buleleng Regency retain their status as public roads.

“Penelokan Main Road on the southern side up to the border with Pura Ulun Danu Batur. Only that section will be utilised for tourism,” he added.

Previously, Penelokan Main Road went viral on social media after a tourist was asked for an entry ticket to the Kintamani area. Deputy Chairman of the Bangli DPRD, I Nyoman Budiada, said this was triggered because Penelokan Main Road still holds public road status.

“Because in the governor’s regulation, it has not yet been listed as a tourism road. Therefore, it remains a public road. That’s why it went viral,” said Budiada.

Budiada stated that there is already an agreement between the Bangli Tourism Department and the Bangli DPRD to change the road’s status to a tourism road. This is supported by the regional regulation of Bangli designating Kintamani as a tourism destination.

“The regional regulation is clear that it (Kintamani) is a tourism destination. From Penelokan Main Road to Pura Ulun Danu Batur,” he said.

Budiada added that the Bangli Regency Government still needs to develop the Kintamani tourism area, including providing basic tourism facilities such as toilets and street lighting.
