Pemuda Muhammadiyah Urges Cadres to Engage at Grassroots Level

The Central Leadership of Pemuda Muhammadiyah has emphasised the importance of young Muhammadiyah cadres being present within society and capable of occupying the nation’s strategic spaces. This assertion was made during the opening of the Tanwir II Pemuda Muhammadiyah 2026, held in Bali from 21–23 May 2026.

The event was opened by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, alongside the General Secretary of the Muhammadiyah Central Board and Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti. The proceedings were also attended by the General Chairman of PP Pemuda Muhammadiyah, Dzulfikar Ahmad Tawalla.

Theme ‘Growing and Rooted for a Glorious Indonesia’ was adopted for Tanwir II. The forum serves as a platform for organisational consolidation in responding to social, political, and economic challenges, as well as the transformation of Indonesia’s younger generation.

In his opening speech, Dzulfikar Ahmad Tawalla, also known as Fikar, asserted that Pemuda Muhammadiyah must not lose its social roots amidst changing times. “We must not allow the organisation to be busy building a stage while forgetting to develop its cadres. We do not need a movement that is loud on social media but silent in its local branches and sub-branches,” said Fikar.

He noted that Pemuda Muhammadiyah must address the real issues facing youth, ranging from universities and villages to mosques and community groups. He assessed that the challenges facing today’s youth involve not only employment and education but also a crisis of direction, unequal access, and a loss of moral courage in the public sphere.

Consequently, Fikar emphasised that organisational growth must produce cadres with the capacity and courage to fill strategic national positions. “Growth occurs when cadres possess capacity, the courage to think, and the ability to seize strategic national spaces. We want Pemuda Muhammadiyah to produce intellectuals, social movers, entrepreneurs, politicians, and future leaders who remain aligned with the people and the values of progressive Islam,” he stated.

He also urged young Muhammadiyah cadres not to merely be spectators of social change, but to act as drivers of civilisation. “Pemuda Muhammadiyah must be a force that reads the era while influencing the direction of civilisation. Rooted downwards to understand the reality of the people, and growing forwards to be able to lead Indonesia,” he said.

Tanwir II Pemuda Muhammadiyah was also attended by several national figures, including the Chairman of the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU), Mochammad Afifuddin, the Vice Chairman of the MPR, Abcandra Muhammad Akbar, and the Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster. Leaders of interfaith youth organisations, academics, and cadres from across Indonesia were also in attendance.

On this occasion, the PP Pemuda Muhammadiyah also launched the book “Negarawan Muda Indonesia” (Young Indonesian Statesmen) by Dzulfikar Ahmad Tawalla. The book is described as a reflection on the importance of presenting politics based on the ethics of service and commitment to the people.
