Pelni transports 335,000 tonnes of coal in first half of 2026 to support national energy supply
State-owned shipping company PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Pelni) transported 335,415 metric tonnes of coal during the first half of 2026 to maintain primary energy supplies for power plants across various regions in Indonesia. President Director Budi Setyawan Wijaya stated that the company is continuously strengthening its role in supporting national energy security through its commercial freight services. “Throughout January to June 2026, Pelni successfully transported 335,415 metric tonnes of coal to a number of steam-powered electricity plants (PLTU),” Budi said in a statement confirmed in Merauke, Papua Selatan, on Friday. He noted that the coal was delivered to regions including Java, Sumatra, and Papua to help maintain the availability of primary energy supplies for the national electricity sector. “Coal transportation is one of the strategic services within our commercial freight business,” he added. Reliable and timely distribution is a critical factor in ensuring the continuous operation of power plants, thereby maintaining electricity supply for both the public and the industrial sector. Budi explained that strengthening maritime logistics services is part of the company’s business transformation to support the distribution of various national strategic commodities. In addition to passenger transport, Pelni is developing logistics as one of its core business pillars. Through its commercial freight services, the company is committed to providing safe, punctual, and reliable distribution to support various strategic national sectors, including energy supply for power plants. Throughout the first half of 2026, Pelni maintained service reliability with on-time delivery performance, prioritising a safety-first and zero-accident culture in every operational activity. This performance drove a significant increase in coal transport volume, which surged by 505.11 percent compared to the same period the previous year. According to Budi, this improvement demonstrates growing customer confidence in Pelni’s maritime logistics services and reinforces the company’s position as a strategic partner in national commodity distribution. “This growth in transport volume motivates us to continue improving the quality of our maritime logistics services,” he said. Looking ahead, the state-owned shipping enterprise will continue to strengthen its operational capabilities, maintain service reliability, and expand its contribution to facilitating the distribution of various strategic commodities that drive the national economy. By strengthening its commercial freight services, Pelni is optimistic it can continue to contribute to the smooth running of the national supply chain, support energy security, and reinforce the role of sea transport as the backbone of logistics distribution in Indonesia.
