JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (PELNI) has for the first time undertaken a large-scale coal shipment using a Supramax-type bulk carrier with a cargo capacity of up to 55,000 MT.

The transportation was carried out under a voyage charter scheme using the MV Majestic Laksono. The inaugural shipment took place in April 2026 on the route from Bontang to Surabaya.

PELNI’s Director of Cargo and Toll Sea Transport Business, Kokok Susanto, stated that utilising a chartered Supramax vessel represents a strategic step for PELNI in meeting market demands for bulk commodity logistics services on a large scale.

“This inaugural shipment of 55,000 tonnes of coal is a strategic move by PELNI to accelerate its cargo transport business performance,” said Kokok in an official statement on Tuesday (12/5/2025).

“We continue to develop our logistics capabilities to provide reliable, efficient, and highly competitive transportation solutions,” he added.

This experience also serves as a new portfolio for PELNI’s cargo transport business line in expanding the scope of national maritime logistics services.

“We are optimistic that developing the commercial cargo transport segment, particularly for bulk commodities like coal, will provide significant positive contributions to the company’s future performance,” he said.

“PELNI is also ready to expand cooperation with various strategic partners to support national logistics needs and strengthen Indonesia’s energy resilience,” Kokok continued.

In addition, PELNI implements a capacity-sharing strategy through collaborations with ship owners to enhance operational flexibility and optimise cargo transport services.

“We are optimistic about becoming a trusted logistics partner for the national energy industry while contributing to supporting the supply chain of strategic commodities in Indonesia,” he emphasised.

PELNI conducts commercial business through ship chartering and broking services, one of which involves transporting coal to support national energy needs, particularly supplies for PLN’s power plants.
