Sleety Rain Falls in Medan

MEDAN, North Sumatra (JP) - Torrential rains have fallen in Medan
and the surrounding areas in the last two weeks, and at noon on
Monday, September 1, sleety rains fell in several places in this
North Sumatra capital like Padang Bulan.

According to the Medan Office of the Meteorology and
Geophysics Agency, the rainfall in Medan and the surrounding
areas as well as Lhoksumawe in North Aceh regency was above
normal.

The head of Polonia Weather Forecast Group, Firman, told The
Jakarta Post here on Monday that once the rainfall reached 107 mm
a day, approaching the average monthly rainfall of 232 mm.

Firman said the high rainfall in Medan and reaching 107 mm a
day was the first in 30 years. "The view distance at that time
was only 600 - 800 meters, very risky for flight," he added.

He predicted that downpours followed by storms and
thunderbolts would continue to occur in North Sumatra and part of
Aceh in from September up to November.

"Heavy rains will fall in the east coast of North Sumatra from
October to November, in the west coast of the region from
September to October, and mountainous hinterland areas from
September to November," he explained.
