Jakarta (ANTARA) – The North Jakarta Satpol PP (Satpol PP Jakut) arrested beggars who were accompanied by a toddler during the Pekat Operation (Penyakit Masyarakat) conducted during Ramadan this year.

‘They are the people in need of social welfare services (PMKS),’ said Budhy Novian, Head of Satpol PP Jakarta Utara, in Jakarta on Friday.

He explained that, overall, the operation yielded at least eight people, comprising five adults and three children, who were detained.

‘Seluruh PMKS, kami bawa ke Sudin Sosial untuk diberikan penanganan lebih lanjut,’ he said.

He said the enforcement actions would continue in this area to reach PMKS such as beggars, the homeless and others, to provide guidance so that they become self-reliant.

Budhy urged residents who feel pity for beggars and the homeless not to give money or alms on the streets.

He said that donations should be directed to social welfare shelters or official channels operating in the social sector.

‘If you give alms on the street, it does not solve the social problems on the streets,’ he said.

Pekat Operation is conducted as part of the government’s efforts to maintain public order and provide a sense of safety to the community, particularly during Ramadan.

He added that operations against social ills would be carried out regularly, especially during Ramadan.

‘This is a demonstration of the government’s commitment to maintaining order and public tranquillity in DKI Jakarta, particularly North Jakarta,’ he said.
