Pekanbaru Mayor Agung Nugroho has issued a firm instruction to all Civil Servants (ASN) and non-ASN personnel within the Pekanbaru City Government to implement waste sorting and management from households. This step is the first of its kind in Indonesia, as well as a strong commitment from the Pekanbaru City Government in supporting the national Indonesia Asri programme and realising Pekanbaru as a clean, healthy, and sustainable Green City. “This is not just an appeal; this is a mandatory instruction. ASN and non-ASN must serve as examples and role models in the midst of society, starting from their own homes,” he emphasised. Under this policy, all ASN and non-ASN are required to sort household waste into two types: organic and inorganic. Organic waste must be processed independently into compost, organic fertiliser, or liquid fertiliser using simple containers that can be prepared at home. Meanwhile, inorganic waste is to be channelled to waste banks or waste stations to gain economic value. He stressed that ASN must act as the driving force in family and community environments, and called on all Pekanbaru residents to jointly resolve the waste issue from its source. “The main thing is to resolve waste from its source. Starting from sorting, then processing it into compost. ASN must lead this change in the midst of society,” he stated. This instruction is also accompanied by tiered monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and forms part of employee performance assessments. The Pekanbaru City Government will provide rewards or recognition to ASN and regional apparatus that are active and consistent in implementing this movement. Conversely, ASN or regional apparatus that fail to carry out these obligations will face sanctions in the form of guidance and performance evaluations in accordance with applicable provisions, as a form of emphasis that this policy must be implemented seriously. Through this policy, the Pekanbaru City Government aims to ensure that the change towards a clean and sustainable city begins with government apparatus, then expands to all levels of society. “If ASN already sets an example, the community will follow. From home, we resolve waste for a cleaner and better future for Pekanbaru,” the Mayor concluded.
