Pekanbaru Earns MURI Record as 9,184 Civil Servants Recite Surah Al-Mulk in Unison

The Pekanbaru City Government has once again achieved national recognition by securing an award from the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) for the largest number of civil servants (ASN) reciting Surah Al-Mulk in Indonesia. A total of 9,184 civil servants participated in the simultaneous recitation of Surah Al-Mulk in the courtyard of the An Nur Mosque. “Tonight we are witnesses to and participants in an extraordinary activity, namely the recitation of Surah Al-Mulk by the largest number of civil servants in Indonesia. The committee’s initial target was 5,000 civil servants. However, the number of registered participants reached 9,184,” said MURI representative Andre Purwandono on Saturday. He expressed hope that the record would not merely be a ceremonial achievement but a collective effort to make Pekanbaru more advanced, prosperous, safe, and beloved by its residents. As a token of appreciation, MURI presented a certificate and a record medal to Pekanbaru Mayor Agung Nugroho and Deputy Mayor. “I also thank all Pekanbaru City Government civil servants and the public who participated in the recitation of Surah Al-Mulk as an expression of gratitude for the 242nd anniversary of Pekanbaru,” Andre added. Meanwhile, Mayor Agung Nugroho revealed that the idea to break the MURI record through the recitation of Surah Al-Mulk came from his wife, Sulastri. The series of events for Pekanbaru’s 242nd anniversary concluded with a mass religious gathering that prioritised spiritually valuable activities providing direct benefits to the community. “This year, like previous years, we did not hold many ceremonial activities that consume the budget. We chose activities whose benefits are directly felt by the community and are in line with the values taught in Islam,” he said. Agung also expressed appreciation to Ustaz Da’as Latif for attending and delivering a sermon to thousands of Pekanbaru residents. The selection of Surah Al-Mulk carries a deep meaning as a reminder that all power, position, and trust belong to Allah SWT. “The positions we hold, whether as mayor, deputy mayor, or all officials and civil servants within the Pekanbaru City Government, are a mandate from Allah SWT. Therefore, Surah Al-Mulk teaches us to remain humble and to continuously improve our service to the community,” he stated.
