Mayor of Pekanbaru, Agung Nugroho, officially opened the Tunas Kencana Camping Ground located in the Danau Bandar Kayangan area on Saturday evening, 2 May 2026. This event was part of efforts to develop environmentally based public spaces and tourism.

The inauguration represents a strategic step by the Pekanbaru City Government in revitalising an area that had not been optimally utilised for years. The activity was marked by the Environmental Care Camping event, involving hundreds of students and scout members.

During the event, Agung Nugroho camped alongside the participants, accompanied by heads of regional device organisations (OPD) and city government officials. Various activities were conducted, from tree planting, bird releases, to seeding fish in the lake area.

“This event is designed as an ongoing agenda. If it provides benefits, we will certainly continue it in the future,” said Agung Nugroho during the activities.

In addition to camping, the series of events was filled with various educational and communal activities such as outbound sessions and film screenings. The inauguration was also marked by the release of birds into the wild as a symbol of concern for environmental conservation.

Agung mentioned that around 300 participants from the Pekanbaru City Branch Scout Council joined the event enthusiastically. He also stated that this activity is a joint initiative with the Pekanbaru City Branch Scout Council.

The Tunas Kencana Camping Ground spans approximately 150 hectares and will be developed as a Green Blue Open Space (RTHB). This area is expected to become a public space that supports ecological functions, environmental education, and community social activities.

According to Agung, the development of this area also provides an alternative for Pekanbaru residents to enjoy nature tourism without having to travel far outside the region.

“Now, people don’t need to go far. Here, there is already a nature tourism spot that can be enjoyed with family,” he said.

The RTHB development programme aligns with efforts to provide healthy, productive, and sustainable public spaces.

Meanwhile, the Chair of the Pekanbaru City Branch Scout Council, Hj Sulastri, assessed that camping activities play an important role in shaping the character of the younger generation, particularly in fostering environmental awareness.

“Through this event, participants are invited to learn about responsibility, togetherness, and the importance of preserving the environment,” she said.

In the future, the Tunas Kencana Camping Ground is planned to become a centre for various educational activities, youth development, and community social activities, while supporting the development of nature tourism in Pekanbaru City.
