PDIP's Position Towards the Government Sparks Debate
A number of political figures are questioning the position of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) towards the government. The party has long described itself as a balancer to the ruling authority. However, some parties are now asking the bull-headed party to clarify its stance.
This discourse resurfaced when Jazilul Fawaid, Chair of the National Awakening Party (PKB) faction in the House of Representatives, urged PDIP to take a firm position regarding the administration of President Prabowo Subianto. He stated that an ambiguous stance could create confusion. Jazilul made these remarks while responding to questions about the alleged participation of a PDIP cadre in a recent demonstration.
‘I hope they will take a firm stance. If they are in the opposition, then be the opposition. Don’t be ambiguous. Because we are all fighting hard to realise what the President has promised. All the programmes have been arranged,’ Jazilul said.
Following the polemic sparked by these comments, Golkar Party Secretary-General Muhammad Sarmuji also weighed in. He initially acknowledged PDIP’s claim of wanting to be seen as a balancer, but questioned the practical role of such a position. ‘What is clear is that PDIP is not in the government. The practice of balancing is another matter. What exactly has been balanced all this time? The people will judge,’ Sarmuji stated. He added, ‘The term balancer itself can already be read by those who want to read it. There is no need to force clarity. Let us just respect it.’
This debate comes amid observations of the close relationship between the head of government and the PDIP Chairperson, who were seen walking hand-in-hand after the Pancasila Day ceremony in early June. This closeness does not reflect a confrontational dynamic between the two.
