PDIP's Hasto: Perry Warjiyo's Successor Must Understand Monetary Stabilisation

PDI Perjuangan (PDIP) Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto has responded to the resignation of Perry Warjiyo as Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI). He stated that Perry’s successor must be a figure who understands monetary stability. “In terms of the mechanism, because BI is independent, the process will go through the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, there will be a fit and proper test, and a figure must be found who truly understands the aspects of our monetary stabilisation,” Hasto told reporters on Tuesday, 28 July 2026. He also expressed hope that the person replacing Perry would be able to control inflation and maintain the rupiah exchange rate. “And the future direction of Bank Indonesia in facing global economic instability,” he said. Hasto noted that news of Perry Warjiyo’s resignation had triggered a negative market response. He urged the government to promptly address the impact. “This negative market reaction is the most honest instrument that we must pay close attention to,” he said. “Therefore, PDI Perjuangan urges that the impact of this negative reaction be swiftly addressed by the government, so that confidence emerges that our economic and political development directions complement each other, supported by justice in the rule of law, so that a level playing field exists and business uncertainty can be minimised,” Hasto concluded. The government previously announced Perry Warjiyo’s resignation from his post as Governor of Bank Indonesia, which was formally submitted to the government on Sunday, 26 July 2026. At a press conference at the BI building, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that the position would be temporarily filled by BI Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti. “As of yesterday, we officially received the resignation letter of the BI Governor addressed to the President,” Prasetyo said during the press conference at the BI building in Jakarta on Monday, 27 July 2026. He confirmed that the government would immediately follow up on Perry’s resignation letter by issuing a presidential decree on the matter. “In accordance with the mechanism, a presidential decree will be issued, along with a notification and an honourable discharge from the Governor of Bank Indonesia,” Prasetyo stated.
