Jakarta (ANTARA) - Secretary General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), Hasto Kristiyanto, visited the capital of Timor Leste, Dili, on Wednesday (June 3rd), ahead of a visit by the 5th President of the Republic of Indonesia and Chairwoman of PDIP, Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Megawati is scheduled to visit Dili at the invitation of the President of Timor Leste, Jose Ramos Horta, to receive the ‘Grand Collar Order of Timor Leste’ award, the highest honour from the government of Timor Leste.

“Mrs. Megawati is receiving this award for her services in paving the way for reconciliation between Indonesia and Timor Leste. On May 20, 2002, as President of the Republic of Indonesia, she visited Timor Leste to attend the commemoration of Timor Leste’s Independence Day,” said Hasto in a written statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.

This visit by Hasto is part of an advance team to discuss Megawati Soekarnoputri’s visit to Dili in July 2026.

Hasto was accompanied by the Head of the PDIP Organizational Division, Andreas H. Pareira, the Head of the PDIP Research and Policy Analysis Agency, Andi Widjajanto, and the Director of Foreign Affairs of PDIP, Hanjaya Setiawan.

Upon arrival in Dili, Hasto and the delegation headed to the Presidential Palace of Timor Leste to meet with the Timor Leste Presidential Office team and discuss important matters related to Megawati Soekarnoputri’s visit.

At the Presidential Palace, Hasto was received by Vicky Tchong and the team from the Presidential Office, who are responsible for the protocol and smooth running of Megawati’s visit next month.

“During the meeting, it was conveyed that, in addition to attending the awarding of the Grand Collar Order of Timor Leste and meeting with President Ramos Horta, Mrs. Megawati will also meet with the Prime Minister of Timor Leste, Xanana Gusmao, meet with Indonesian community leaders in Dili, and visit historical sites of both countries,” he said.

Previously, President Jose Ramos Horta visited Megawati Soekarnoputri’s residence on Jalan Teuku Umar, Menteng, on Monday, March 23, 2026.

The meeting on Teuku Umar was a continuation of a previous friendly discussion when the two met and spoke at the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity international forum in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

“During the meeting, President Ramos Horta invited Mrs. Megawati to visit Timor Leste to receive the award,” said Hasto.

In addition to discussing Megawati’s visit, Hasto explained that the PDIP delegation also discussed details of cooperation to enhance friendship, both through party cooperation and relations between the two neighbouring countries, which share strategic economic ties.

“We are quite proud that several of our SOEs, such as Pertamina, BRI, Mandiri, Waskita Karya, Hutama Karya, and Pegadaian, are very active in economic activities in Timor Leste,” said Hasto.
