PDIP Pushes for Immediate Discussion of the Election Bill
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle is pushing for the discussion of the Draft Law on General Elections (RUU Pemilu) in the House of Representatives. PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto stated that general elections must be well-prepared.
“Elections are a five-yearly mechanism to build the quality of democracy that must be properly prepared, including through the Election Law,” Hasto said after the seminar ‘71 Years of Commemoration of the Asian-African Conference: Relevance of the Asian-African Movement in the Current Geopolitical Crisis’ at the PDIP Party School, Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, on Saturday, 18 April 2026.
PDIP is also encouraging its members to collaborate with other factions to expedite the discussion of the Election Law.
PDIP, he said, has already conducted several workshops to discuss strategic issues. Some of these issues include the electoral system, minimum threshold, and the independence of election organisers.
The last discussion on the revision of the Election Law was held by Commission II of the DPR on 10 March. At that time, the DPR invited former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mohammad Mahfud Mahmodin, as well as Jimly Asshiddiqie.
Member of Commission II of the DPR Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tandjung stated that the discussion of the RUU Pemilu should have been held on Monday, 13 April 2026. The Golkar Party politician admitted he did not know the reason for the postponement of the Commission II DPR agenda, which was scheduled to hold an internal meeting to hear a presentation from the House of Representatives Expert Body or BKD.
According to him, the discussion on the revision of the Election Law is extremely important considering the approaching election date. For example, he said, the Constitutional Court decision related to several electoral issues. In particular, Doli said, Decision Number 135 which separates the conduct of elections.
That decision, according to him, has received pro and contra responses from the public, so it must be immediately addressed by completing the discussion on the revision of the Election Law. Doli hopes that party leaders, the DPR, and factions can take a progressive stance in discussing the revision of the Election Law to ensure legal certainty in the democratic festivities.
“If this is done at the beginning of 2027, I think it’s not just tight, but already very late,” Doli said at the DPR, MPR, and DPD Complex on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.
