PDIP: Prabowo and Megawati's Hand-Holding Moment Reflects Long-Standing Relationship
PDIP responded to the moment when President Prabowo Subianto and former President Megawati Soekarnoputri held hands after the Pancasila Day ceremony. The party considered the moment routine given their longstanding friendly relationship.
‘It’s nothing unusual. President Prabowo and Madam Megawati have known each other personally and communicated well for a long time,’ said PDIP Central Executive Board Chairman Andreas Hugo Pareira to journalists on Monday, 1 June 2026.
Andreas noted that Prabowo had publicly acknowledged Megawati’s role in his political career. The two also ran as presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the 2009 election.
‘Prabowo openly stated during a recent DPR session how Madam Megawati supported him during key moments in his life. They even ran as a presidential ticket in 2009,’ he added.
Furthermore, Andreas viewed the camaraderie among leaders as positive, but hoped it would benefit the public.
‘Leaders’ camaraderie is positive, but it should also bring benefits for the people, nation, and country,’ he said.
Prabowo and Megawati attended the Pancasila Day ceremony, appearing amicable throughout the event.
The ceremony was held at the Pancasila Building courtyard, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Central Jakarta, on Monday, 1 June. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming also attended.
After the ceremony, another warm moment between Prabowo and Megawati was observed. Prabowo was seen chatting with former Vice Presidents Jusuf Kalla (10th and 12th) and Ma’ruf Amin (13th), while Megawati was positioned behind them.
Prabowo then gestured for Megawati, Kalla, and Ma’ruf Amin to proceed, but Megawati invited Prabowo to walk with her.
Megawati was seen holding Prabowo’s hand. The two walked together, laughing.
