PDIP: Megawati Wishes to Maintain Good Relations with Prabowo
PDIP has reaffirmed its stance as a counterbalancing party during the era of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration. The party adopted this position out of a desire to safeguard healthy democracy in Indonesia whilst maintaining good relations with Prabowo.
This was conveyed by PDIP Central Executive Board Chairman Ahmad Basarah following the conclusion of a working visit by Indonesia’s fifth President and PDIP General Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Megawati concluded her itinerary by performing the umrah pilgrimage together with her children, M Prananda Prabowo and Puan Maharani.
In one of her prayers, Megawati asked for guidance and strength in leading the party. According to Basarah, PDIP’s current position is not an easy one.
“On the one hand, Ibu Mega has drawn a political line to become a political party outside government, serving as a democratic counterbalance to the President’s administration, the administration led by President Prabowo. But on the other hand, Bu Mega also wishes to maintain her commitment to friendship, her humanitarian commitment to Pak Prabowo,” Basarah said in Saudi Arabia on Sunday (15/2/2026).
Basarah then quoted Megawati’s remarks about her friendship with Prabowo. According to Basarah, Megawati does not want her relationship with Prabowo to deteriorate because of politics.
“What Ibu Mega said was, ‘He has been my friend since long ago, and we do not want our relationship to be damaged merely because of politics.’ Therefore, between humanitarian relations and political relations, Bu Mega is striving to find points of equilibrium,” he added.
For this reason, Basarah continued, Megawati has chosen to carry out party activities that have a direct impact on the public. According to Basarah, many PDIP officials have stepped in to assist communities affected by disasters.
“So Bu Mega is lowering the political temperature of PDI Perjuangan’s activities, directly addressing the issues and problems faced by the public,” Basarah said.
“And I believe that PDI Perjuangan’s humanitarian activities of this nature indirectly assist Prabowo’s administration in fulfilling the government’s duties and responsibilities to be present amongst communities experiencing disasters,” he added.
This approach, Basarah said, represents one of Megawati’s efforts to maintain her party’s point of equilibrium. Megawati is striving to preserve a healthy democratic system whilst nurturing good relations with Prabowo.
“I believe this is the form of balance currently being adopted by Ibu Megawati Soekarnoputri in positioning PDI Perjuangan as a counterbalancing party so that our democracy runs healthily. But on the other hand, Ibu Mega also wishes to maintain her good relationship with Pak Prabowo Subianto,” he said.
