PDIP Hopes New BI Governor Understands Monetary Stabilisation

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) has responded to the resignation of Perry Warjiyo as Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI). PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto stated that Warjiyo’s replacement must understand monetary stabilisation. “In terms of the mechanism, because BI is independent, the process will go through the House of Representatives (DPR RI) with a fit and proper test,” Hasto told reporters at the PDIP Party School in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (28/7/2026). He said the successor must be someone who truly understands monetary stabilisation. He hopes the steps taken by the replacement will be able to control inflation, maintain the rupiah exchange rate, and stabilise goods prices. “We must find a figure who truly understands our monetary stabilisation aspects and the future direction of Bank Indonesia in viewing global economic instability,” he stated. Hasto observed that Perry Warjiyo’s resignation has received a negative response from the public. He said this needs to be a concern for the government, particularly the DPR RI. “If we look at the market reaction, the resignation of the Bank Indonesia Governor has been responded to negatively. Uncertainty is considered to be increasing, and the market has also reacted negatively. This is an instrument that must be considered by the government, including the DPR RI,” he said. “This negative market reaction is the most honest instrument that we must pay close attention to,” he added. PDIP urged the government to respond quickly to the negative impact. He hopes public confidence in economic and political development will be restored. “Therefore, PDI Perjuangan encourages the government to respond quickly to the negative reaction so that a sense of trust emerges that our economic and political development directions complement each other, supported by justice in the rule of law. So that a level playing field exists and uncertainty in the business world can be minimised,” he concluded. Previously, President Prabowo Subianto was set to administratively follow up on Perry Warjiyo’s resignation letter from the position of Governor of Bank Indonesia. Prabowo will issue a Presidential Decree (Keppres) for Warjiyo’s honourable discharge. “Furthermore, administratively, today we will follow up on the resignation letter because, according to the mechanism, a Presidential Decree will be issued regarding his honourable discharge from the position of Governor of Bank Indonesia,” said Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi at the BI Office in Central Jakarta on Monday (27/7). Prasetyo stated that Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti will automatically replace Warjiyo. Destry will become the Acting Governor of BI and will continue all duties. “Furthermore, in accordance with the Bank Indonesia Law, the position of Governor of Bank Indonesia will automatically be held by the Senior Deputy Governor, who will subsequently carry out all duties as Acting Governor. It is noted that the Senior Deputy Governor in question is Ibu Destry Damayanti,” he said.
