BLITAR, KOMPAS.com – The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) is confident that the government under President Prabowo Subianto is working to correct foreign policy decisions taken before the Middle East crisis arose due to attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran.

This effort comes in the wake of heavy criticism over the policy of joining the Peace Board established by US President Donald Trump, which was seen as an obstacle to maintaining neutrality in facing the Middle East crisis.

PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto assessed that the government’s efforts to correct foreign policy decisions are evident in President Prabowo’s steps shortly after the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

“From President Prabowo’s efforts to invite various figures for dialogue, we are confident that it is returning to that track (free and active foreign policy).”

Hasto expressed this view to the media at the Bung Karno Mausoleum complex in Blitar City on Sunday (29/3/2026).

According to Hasto, Indonesia’s experience of colonisation by other nations has given rise to a spirit of defending the independence of other nations worldwide, as colonisation violates humanitarian and justice values.

The principle of independence as the right of all nations must not be denied by the actions of powerful states against other sovereign countries, such as the US-Israel actions against Iran.

“That is the true principle of free and active foreign policy, which has been well founded by the nation’s founders, Bung Karno and Bung Hatta,” he said.

According to Hasto, the spirit of striving for the independence of other nations in the world is a constitutional mandate contained in the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution.

“That is the reason for our independence, our existence, (namely) to strive for the independence of other nations in the world,” Hasto stated.

“This must also serve as an example and be continued in free and active foreign policy,” Hasto added.

Hasto further stated that the Indonesian government must firmly uphold the basic principles of foreign policy as mandated in the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution.
