PDIP Attributes Prabowo's Fiscal Challenges to Predecessor's Legacy
Jakarta, VIVA – The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) has stated that the fiscal challenges faced by President Prabowo are a legacy of his predecessor. This was stated by PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto following the Pancasila Day ceremony at At-Taufiq Mosque Field in South Jakarta on Monday, 1 June 2026. ‘We see now that President Prabowo is facing various fiscal issues. It is not because of President Prabowo but due to the consequences of previous administrations,’ he said. He highlighted the excessive social assistance (Bansos) disbursed during the previous administration, amounting to $13 billion. ‘For instance, during electoral purposes, social assistance spending was so large that foreign political analysts estimate it exceeded $13 billion,’ he explained. Moreover, infrastructure projects that failed to deliver sustainable impacts, such as the capital relocation and policies favouring specific interests. ‘Infrastructure spending with no multiplier effect, the capital relocation, and downstreaming policies benefiting oligarchs,’ he added. Therefore, Hasto stressed that the previous administration’s legacy has left legal, political, and democratic system flaws. ‘These are the issues being challenged; the damage to the legal, political, and democratic systems will inevitably prompt public questioning,’ he concluded.
