PDI rehash
The Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) has been divided into two poles. The Fatimah Ahmad group and the Megawati group. There is another (unconstitutional) group, the Yusuf Merukh group, that was not recognized by the government. Each group claims to be legitimate.
I hope the government acts wisely and carefully in its effort to solve the PDI row. The government should not side with any faction on the pretext that it is in line with the organization's statutes. For example, supporting the PDI Congress in Medan, North Sumatra, by the Fatimah Ahmad faction on June 22, 1996.
The government's support of the congress will worsen the internal conflict. The party members will inevitably divided into two poles. Physical clashes might ensue. Demonstrations may happen before the general election. It is difficult for the government to determine which faction represents the party. The government should help reconcile the two conflicting factions. If necessary, the planned congress should be postponed until after the 1997 election. If the congress is held at all, it must receive the support from all elements of the party.
I am concerned about the fate of PDI. The government should also consider the mass of people behind Megawati, who happens to be the daughter of the late president Sukarno.
