PDI rebels refused
SEMARANG, Central Java: Chief of the Regional Military
Command, Maj. Gen. Soeyono, refused to meet with members of the
Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) yesterday.
The PDI rebels who have broken away from the leadership of
democratically-elected Megawati Soekarnoputri wanted to report to
him on the formation of local rival executive boards.
"I don't have any business with the party rebels," he told
journalists. He reiterated the government's policy of recognizing
only the leadership of Megawati.
He said the military would help the PDI resolve its problem of
internal bickering if the party asked for assistance. "They
should try to solve their own problem and if they give up and
need us, we can intervene," he said. (har)
