Jakarta (ANTARA) - PDI Perjuangan distributed 485 sacrificial cows through its Provincial and District Leadership Council offices across East Java to residents of pesantrens, religious mass organisations, mosques, and orphanages.

Chairman of the PDI Perjuangan Central Leadership Council, Said Abdullah, stated in a press release on Thursday in Jakarta that Eid al-Adha is both a spiritual and social act of worship.

“We observe that most of East Java’s population works in the informal sector, meaning they are employed but with inadequate or low incomes,” said Said.

He explained that the sacrificial cows slaughtered at various DPC offices across East Java would be distributed to poor local communities and orphanages.

Said hoped the DPD’s efforts would form a social fabric as part of the party’s identity as a “party of the common people” sharing with the “common people”.

However, he noted that the national figure for formal sector employment stands at 59.4%, higher than East Java’s rate.

He stated that this indicates East Java residents, despite working, do not receive fair wages, health insurance, pension schemes, severance pay upon dismissal, leave entitlements, or other standard formal sector worker rights.

Therefore, PDI Perjuangan in East Java aims to share with poor households, mostly in the informal sector, so they can partake in the blessings of Eid al-Adha.

Meanwhile, he cited data showing East Java residents consume only 6-9 grams of beef per capita weekly, compared to the global average of 150-200 grams, and even higher in developed nations.

“East Java produces over 100,000 tonnes of beef and dairy cattle annually to meet local and national demand, yet local consumption and nutritional adequacy remain low,” he said.

Consequently, he added, DPD leaders pooled contributions from their earnings to share with the community.

He noted that for poor households, consuming beef is a luxury due to its high current prices.

“During this Eid al-Adha celebration, we are determined to assist poor residents to improve their situation. At the very least, they can joyfully enjoy sacrificial meat,” Said said.
