PDI Perjuangan assesses relationship between Megawati and Prabowo remains intact

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) believes that the relationship between the Chairperson of PDI Perjuangan, Megawati Soekarnoputri, and President Prabowo Subianto remains well-maintained despite being in different political positions.

Speaking in Jakarta on Wednesday, PDI Perjuangan Central Executive Board member Said Abdullah stated that the relationship between the two leaders is supported by three aspects: long-standing friendship, statesmanship, and a national political outlook. “I believe this example is also being followed by the PDI Perjuante Faction and the Gerindra Party within the House of Representatives (DPR),” said Said.

According to him, both factions are able to engage in discussions and exchange views regarding government policies and programmes. Despite differences in opinion on certain matters, both parties continue to respect and understand each other’s positions. “Friendship and social ties continue, even though the 2024 Presidential Election has concluded,” he added.

He noted that their relationship has remained intact even through periods of intense political competition, such as when PDI Perjuangan nominated Joko Widodo in the 2014 Presidential Election, facing Prabowo at the time. Said emphasised that this bond is not merely based on friendship but is also underpinned by statesmanship.

He further noted that President Prabowo continues to place trust in Megawati to carry out her state duties, even though PDI Perjuangan is not part of the government. “This means President Prabowo views Mrs Megawati as possessing statesmanship. The same applies vice versa, so the matter transcends practical politics,” he said.

He assessed that both leaders share a common vision for national politics, ensuring that differing political positions are not interpreted as hostility. According to Said, PDI Perjuangan’s position as a balancing force in parliament is respected by President Prabowo, including the various inputs provided by party cadres. “For me, both figures have reached a level that transcends practical politics; they engage in politics for the nation and the state, rather than solely for power,” concluded Said.
